Human Interest Story

Around 40 years ago a terrible slaughter of elephants took place on Mt. Nyiru, the massive mountain to the Southeast of Lake Turkana, The elephants were poached until there were none left. Some escaped, but many were killed; their ivory smuggled out. Two generations of people living on this mountain have not seen elephants. Today there is good news! Nyiru, has been graced with the elephants return, 3 of them in March this year. They did not stay long, but they found out that Mt Nyiru is safe for elephants again! For the last 3 years IEF supported Milgis Trust scouts have been reporting that the odd Elephant had been seen heading north of the Ndoto mountains, but always turned around. The local people think that these 3 Elephants have gone back to collect the rest of the herd, as they found things to be very peaceful in the forest! Two went to the East of the Ol Donyo Mara range, and 1 'Sangalai ' (lone bull) returned via a route to the south, and has now been seen in the North end of the Ndotos. The amazing thing is the elephants followed the track that they used to use before they were decimated in the 1960s-80s to climb the mountain from the Horr valley. Mt Nyiru has also suffered from terrible fires started by people to clear the bush for cattle. The scouts keep explaining that elephants clear brush very well as they have discovered in the Ndotos!
