The alarming loss of arctic sea ice threatens the polar bear's survival. Polar bears rely on the sea ice to hunt, breed, and, in some cases, to den. Scientists predict we could lose two-thirds of all polar bears by 2050 if current warming trends continue.
Although polar bears are in trouble, the situation is still not irreversible ... if you will help! Polar Bears International is dedicated to the worldwide conservation of the polar bear and its habitat through research, stewardship, and education. Leading polar bear scientists, educators, and animal care professionals work with us to ensure the species' survival.
Research. PBI funds vital scientific research so that authorities have data on which to make sound decisions - and ring alarm bells. Our funding helped lead to listing the polar bear as a threatened species. Our maternal den and hearing studies are helping to set guidelines to protect polar bears from industrial disturbances.
Stewardship. PBI created a Polar Bear Sustainability Alliance team to assist authorities in dealing with scenarios like rescuing orphaned cubs, reducing human-bear conflicts in villages, and helping injured or starving bears. PBI also funds major greenhouse gas reduction efforts like our Polar Bear Forest-a tree planting project and our Project Polar Bear contest for teens—a challenge to reduce CO2.
Education. Finally, PBI has organized a broad educational outreach with programs to help the public understand the link between greenhouse gas emissions and sea ice loss—and to inspire, motivate, and empower them to take action.
